East Carolina migrates from IAC to Encompass
Just a few short months ago, East Carolina University's Alumni website (here) was relaunched and now runs on iModules Encompass platform. In September alone, the alumni office sent over 230,000 targeted emails to alumni along with hosting event registration, an online calendar and frequently updated news for the Pirate faithful.
Having recently migrated from a competitive product, Doug Smith, Director of Membership & Marketing gave us a quick low down on why they migrated and what they like about Encompass.
What is your role at ECU?
Located in Greenville, North Carolina the East Carolina Alumni Association informs, involves, and serves members of the East Carolina family throughout their lifelong relationship with the University. I serve as Director of Membership & Marketing, overseeing all of our print and web initiatives as well as our membership program.
Recently ECU converted from IAC to iModules, why the change?
We saw the way iModules was leveraging technology to be a leader in the online community industry. “Inform” and “involve” are two keywords in our mission and having a savvy online presence like the one iModules provides is essential to helping us fulfill our mission – especially with young alumni.
Any advice you could share with folks considering migrating?
Be patient. I know first-hand that it’s hard to be patient after going through a RFP process and the excitement has arrived that your site is going to come to fruition, but excellence doesn’t happen overnight.
When making a switch like this training is important. How was that experience?
I am really pleased with Jeanette Maack and her crew. I’ve taken advantage of both the on-going training opportunities and online training documents in the Client Community on several occasions. Having the Sandbox available as my site was being developed was a plus as well. Not having to wait until my site was ready to have a “hands on” experience with developing my site lessened the learning curve when the site was ready.
What features have you enjoyed the most about Encompass?
The best feature about Encompass is that the system is built entirely off of the same platform, not a combination of components that don’t function together. E-mail marketing has been one of our biggest benefits of switching. We rely heavily on e-mail to inform our alumni (we sent over 230,000 e-mails in September) and having a sophisticated system that is easy to use allows me to spend more time on other projects and less on producing email blasts. We are looking forward to utilizing e-commerce, which we have not implemented as of yet.
What tips or advice would you share with officers contemplating a similar move?
Conversion from one system to another, regardless of companies, requires an investment of time that we as alumni professionals don’t generally have. However, whether you just finished your site or have been up and running for years, it has been my experience that the short-term pain of converting is well worth the long-term gain.
So tell us, what is it like being a real pirate?
Arrrgh! matey...every day it’s a Pirate’s life for me!
